WELLSVILLE, Ohio (October 8, 2015) – South Field Energy LLC announced today its plan to build a 1,100-megawatt, natural gas electric generating facility in Columbiana County.

The facility is Advanced Power’s second such project in northeastern Ohio. The South Field Energy project is similar to Advanced Power’s Carroll County Energy, a 700-megawatt natural gas electric generation facility under construction near Carrollton. The South Field Energy project is also expected to be a significant stimulus for the economy of Columbiana County and surrounding communities.

The project is a $1.1 billion capital investment that will generate an average peak of 550 construction jobs for up to three years. When completed, the facility will employ 25 full-time employees in well-paying engineering, technical, operation, management and administrative positions. The proposed facility will be located on less than 20 acres of land that is part of a 150-acre parcel. The site is approximately three miles from the Village of Wellsville.

“Ohioans face a growing gap in energy production,” said Jonathan Winslow, Senior Vice President for Development at Advanced Power. “With facilities like this, we can begin to close that gap by using advanced technology to produce substantial, reliable power, while also minimizing our environmental footprint.”

South Field Energy will utilize General Electric’s (GE) highly flexible and efficient gas turbine technology.  Bechtel, a global leader in engineering, procurement, and construction with more than 60 years’ experience in the design and execution of complex power projects, will serve as general contractor for the project. Bechtel has previously partnered with Advanced Power and is currently constructing the Carroll County Energy project using GE technology.

The new generation of GE turbine technology will make the facility one of the most efficient in the country. The facility will be fueled by clean natural gas and have the capability to operate on ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD), ensuring reliable operations when gas is not available.

The project will be a catalyst for economic growth and infrastructure improvement throughout Columbiana County. The company plans to pursue an Enterprise Zone Agreement, which will provide money directly to local schools.

South Field Energy is one of two significant developments by Advanced Power in the east Ohio region. In conjunction with sister facility Carroll County Energy, these projects represent a total investment of more than $2 billion.

Winslow said the project is in the process of completing environmental studies and will be applying for and obtaining the necessary permits. Open houses will be announced in the coming months for people to learn more about the project and the company soon will have additional information available at www.southfieldenergy.com.

South Field Energy is a subsidiary of Advanced Power, a leading energy development company based in Boston, Mass. Advanced Power has fully developed 1,540 MW power generation projects since 2000 and currently has 5,390 MW under development with 2,350 MW of generation under development in the U.S.
